While the Allied ships watched from a distance as Smyrna was being destroyed and Greeks were drowning on the shores of Ionia, the captain of the Tokei Maru threw his cargo overboard to make room for as many people as possible. The ship set sail for the port of Piraeus. During the journey, the captain showed the new immigrants around the private cabins of the ship, and the Tokei Maru transformed into a place of cleansing and Japanese beauty.
